Iron Cross Accessory/ Cigarette Case
The Iron Cross (a black four-pointed cross with white trim, with the arms widening towards the ends, similar to a cross pattée), was designed by the neoclassical architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and reflects the cross borne by the Teutonic Knights in the 14th century.
The Iron Cross is also the emblem of the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, marked on armored vehicles and aircraft. It is often worn as a German Military Decoration. German law prohibits the wearing of a swastika, so in 1957 the West German government authorised replacement Iron Crosses with an Oak Leaf Cluster in place of the swastika, similar to the Iron Crosses of 1813, 1870, and 1914, which could be worn by World War II Iron Cross recipients.
Today the Iron Cross is popular amongst bikers, hot rodders skaters and punks. This originated as a provocative gesture to offend the public, but became a means of subverting the symbols of an authoritarian regime into a symbol of non-conformity.
